Pyrrhic Victory Pumpkin

The pumpkin was stolen.  According to Phil Carney, “The responses to the pumpkin were amazing.  People were thrilled and excited to have a pumpkin growing in our neighborhood.” While the pumpkin is gone, here are two photos of things that likely won’t be stolen, and which continue to make the garden such a delight.

A Pumpkin Grows in Dupont Circle?

Michelle Obama can be proud of her closest neighborhood. The pumpkin pictured is fruit of the labors of Phil Carney (aka Scoop, aka Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner 2B-07). Phil has long been gardening in the public space and for the public pleasure.

The formerly forlorn patch at the point where Mass Ave meets P Street on the east side of Dupont Circle next to the Sulgrave Club is currently adorned with cascades of flowers, feathery grasses, nodding sunflowers, fragrant mint, butterflies, bumblebees, and, yes, pumpkins.

Urban gardening is subject to setbacks. Phil’s friends have heard the horror stories of hooligans ripping out swaths of carefully nurtured perennials or absconding with the geraniums. And many of us have experienced the same ourselves when taking on a tree box or setting an urn of pansies upon the stairs. An urban garden like this one, pumpkins or no, is truly a victory garden.

Celebrating Dupont Circle, a new community project, celebrating the history, present, and future of Dupont Circle and environs.

We plan to celebrate many aspects of Dupont Circle in the city of Washington D.C.: its significance in the history of the city; having a walking tour with markers about the Circle: residents, architecture, its importance in the development of the city. The Park itself and environs: adding to seasonal plantings, more flowers, and starting a demonstration vegetable garden, with the help of both children and adults in the area, involving schoolchildren from local schools. Relating to the historical plan of the park to recreate some of aspects of its original design.
