Environment Committee: Help Save our Street Trees!

DCCA’s Environment Committee announces a new Tree Watering Rebate Program that provides for DCCA members to receive a $10 rebate on purchase of a Treegator, the green bags that wrap around tree trunks and are an easy way to get water to street trees.DCCA hopes the program will encourage homeowners, apartment buildings and businesses to take responsibility for regular watering of young street trees in the public space in front of their properties.Newly planted street trees need 20 gallons of water a week from May to October, for the first three years, in order to survive. The city plants the trees on an annual cycle, and is currently planting a number of new street trees in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, but it depends on residents and businesses to water them.There are three easy ways to water a street tree:

1. Poke 5 holes close together in the side of a 5-gallon bucket, about 2 inches from the bottom. Fill the bucket to the rim and let it drain out next to the tree trunk.Do this 3 times.

2. Leave a garden hose on very low (just a trickle) next to the trunk for one hour.

3. Use a Treegator®. Just fill the bag once a week.
