Fun fact:  The California Syndicate was a group of western developers, including Nevada Senator William Morris Stewart, Curtis Hillyer and Thomas Sunderland. Sixty cents per foot for then-marshy land!

What do they have in common?

What do a former White House (in 1927), a floating staircase, and a secret garden have in common?

They’re all on the 2009 Dupont Circle House Tour, with highlights ranging from stately grand homes and an eclectic mansion, to cleverly restored townhouses and a commercial garage transformed to a trend-setting loft.  Your ticket ($25 in advance/$30 day of) also provides admission to Afternoon Tea at the Washington Club (the former Patterson House) at 15 Dupont Circle, NW.

Pyrrhic Victory Pumpkin

The pumpkin was stolen.  According to Phil Carney, “The responses to the pumpkin were amazing.  People were thrilled and excited to have a pumpkin growing in our neighborhood.” While the pumpkin is gone, here are two photos of things that likely won’t be stolen, and which continue to make the garden such a delight.

A Pumpkin Grows in Dupont Circle?

Michelle Obama can be proud of her closest neighborhood. The pumpkin pictured is fruit of the labors of Phil Carney (aka Scoop, aka Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner 2B-07). Phil has long been gardening in the public space and for the public pleasure.

The formerly forlorn patch at the point where Mass Ave meets P Street on the east side of Dupont Circle next to the Sulgrave Club is currently adorned with cascades of flowers, feathery grasses, nodding sunflowers, fragrant mint, butterflies, bumblebees, and, yes, pumpkins.

Urban gardening is subject to setbacks. Phil’s friends have heard the horror stories of hooligans ripping out swaths of carefully nurtured perennials or absconding with the geraniums. And many of us have experienced the same ourselves when taking on a tree box or setting an urn of pansies upon the stairs. An urban garden like this one, pumpkins or no, is truly a victory garden.
